Ryukyu Indigo, Piece by Piece

For our most recent release we developed an original cotton/hemp double cloth, woven in Aichi and hand–dyed in Kyoto. First dyed with sumi (ink), then with Ryukyu indigo, this high–density cloth is handled in short five–metre lengths, requiring repeated immersion and rinsing to build its depth of colour.

Producing the distinct greenish–blue Ryukyu indigo begins with cultivating the fields by hand. The plants are then harvested before being soaked, fermented, extracted and purified into precipitated indigo for dyeing.

We cut this cloth into S8 Weather Shirts and S5 Shop Shirts for the recent R20 release.
